The other day, I went into a local biz for a pickup I had ordered online.
A gal working there (an acquaintance) greeted me with a smile and asked how I was doing because I had seen this person several times. I knew this person's name, so I naturally thought she would know mine. I told her I had a pickup and expected her to go grab mine out of her pile, but instead, she walked over to the pickups and asked, "What's your name?"
I was taken aback. Did she not know who I was? 😂 😂 😂 I mean, I know I'm not special but I really thought this person knew who I was.
We've all been there. We all have moments of panic when we think we should know someone's name but get put on the spot and can't think of it, am I right? I also know that some people are terrible with names, and I am one of them.
Do I fault this person for not knowing my name? NO! She sees tons of people in a day. Would it have been nice if she had known my name? YES! It would have made my experience a little sweeter.
If we do one thing as business owners, let's make a point of making the small things count. Truly, a little goes a long way.

Let’s settle this once and for all…Are you a “give me all the color” gal, or do you gravitate more to neutral subtle palettes?
Not sure if you’ve noticed, but lately I can’t get enough color (see stories from today for more). In fact, I have a docket of brand color palettes I’m dying to use for a brand just like yours. (A’hem-DM me studioa-designs to chat with me about that.)
I think bright colors sometimes get a bad wrap, because the perception is that color isn’t as sophisticated as neutrals, but when done right, a color palette can ELEVATE a sophisticated design even more, IMO!

Those 10 questions can get the ball rolling for bringing your vision board to life.
Once you have your generalized goals written, go back and make them specific by adding numbers, deadlines, etc.
For example, if your general goal this year is to “make more money” you can make that specific by saying, “I want to make $5,000/month and in order to do that I need to sell 5 spots for my course each month.”
See the difference? The specific goal is way more clear and it helps you see what action you need to take to actually achieve the ultimate thing you want.

But make it strategic! (If you don’t know, that’s my favorite ‘S’ word. 😏)

Like I mentioned earlier, the concept of LinkTree and other link in bio services is great – that’s not what I have a problem with.
I just have a problem with NOT moving your social media audience onto your website where you have way more control over their experience.
One of my favorite solutions that I’ve implemented for myself and for my clients is creating a page on your website that’s designed like a LinkTree, but doesn’t compromise your branding, buyer journey or your SEO.

👋It’s me, Amanda, your Brand & Website designer at @studioa_designs. I'm excited to share the finishing touches on a new law firm deluxe package. This client chose two add-ons to the already robust brand and website strategy and design package….1) brand naming and 2) brand photography.
Six attorneys sat in a room with me for 3 hours straight and we talked/strategized about their hopes, dreams and goals as these two prestigious law firms joined forces. They expressed the importance of being a law firm who cares about their clients and is also firmly grounded in legal expertise and professionalism. I'm telling you, it was an absolute blast! Each of them had something unique to bring to the conversation through the worksheets and exercises. It brought up things they hadn't previously discussed or even thought about.
There are several reasons for biz’s needing a rebrand but they nailed it by contacting me at just the right time to launch things when they merged into one firm. I'm very proud of them for choosing a refined, modern feel for the next era.
In my stories, I mentioned I spent all day working on this reel. Sometimes things just don't jive well and things take WAY TOO LONG. Lol. Thanks for the love and I appreciate all of you for being here.

When I first heard this advice as a branding and website design service provider, I thought, “hmmmm, I’m not so sure that’s something I want to do.”
So I didn’t.
This is an unpopular choice and very rarely advised by brand experts, but after putting much thought into the idea of niching down my client base and limiting myself to a certain industry, I ultimately decided it’s not how I wanted to run my business.
I have 6 very intentional reasons for this choice.
1. I thrive on variety.
2. I believe all businesses deserve quality and strategic branding….not just the glamorous ones.
3. I love a good challenge.
4. I’m a passionate supporter of small business.
5. It’s more about the person, not the industry.

Website button text seems so minuscule, but a button call to action, often abbreviated as CTA, simply prompts the user to take ONE next action. When created strategically, it’s the thing that will move someone along in your website visitor’s journey.
CTA’s you are used to seeing come in the form of “subscribe now,” or “follow for more” or the cta I refuse to use when I design client websites...”LEARN MORE”
The key with CTA’s is clarity so the person knows exactly what step they are taking. It’s ok to make button words cute and fun, as long as it's clear and doesn't cause confusion for the user which can lead to no decision at all. I find the words “LEARN MORE” to be mostly unhelpful in getting someones attention. It's generic, unoriginal, and doesn't convert. Check out the CTA’s in this reel and try adding one or two to your website!

We all have a set of industry terms and phrases we regularly use that the rest of the world can't really relate to.
But the thing about becoming a business owner of any kind (regardless of your industry) is that you find yourself in a new world that throws a lot of the same language around.
And graphic design and branding terms usually fall into that.
Everyone needs branding and a website, so you'll likely find yourself in a conversation with vendors/designers that says something like, “do you have a set of brand guidelines?” or “do you have a vector file of your logo?” and you might be left looking at them like 🤔
And while it's definitely not your responsibility to know what all of these things mean, it can be helpful to have a deeper understanding of these terms so you can easily communicate with your designer and be able to specifically ask for what you need.

Here are my favorite ways to use video during my client process:
Your story - Add video to your about you section on your website. Your story brings your mission, vision and values to life for people to hear.
Thank you pages - after someone purchases your product or books a service, instead of only using text on the thank you/confirmation page, you can include a video that discusses their next steps so they know exactly what to expect.
Tutorial videos - if you deliver projects to your clients that require further explanation, sometimes a video can be much better than long paragraphs in an email. One of the easiest ways to incorporate tutorial videos is by using @use_loom. It’s a huge time-saver.
Start by laying out your script, then setting up your phone camera, and just going for it. Keep that camera rolling and be yourself. It doesn’t have to be perfect!

Work smarter, not harder. 💥
Avoid starting from scratch everytime you create @canva design.
Once you have a defined a visual brand, meaning you know your colors, fonts and design elements, there’s no reason to start from scratch when creating a social media post, reel cover, etc.
Instead, you can create each item ONCE and then use it over and over and over again while changing a few things here and there.
You can create your basic designs and save those as your own personal templates in your Canva account and then use the “duplicate” feature to use them when needed.

Some designers out there claim that you can’t create what you need to create for your business without the use of Adobe or other complex programs, but as a small business owner myself, I know that programs like this often come with an expense much higher than you’re comfortable paying, not to mention the learning curve that comes with those higher-end programs. As someone with a lot going on, you need quick and efficient and that’s what Canva provides, so it’s for that reason that I am a Canva advocate! Just use it with these things in mind, K? 💓

We did a little something crazy last weekend! @jtthomps1 and I set out on a 3-day DIY adventure, gel staining our garage doors and front door. We really enjoy doing these teamwork type projects and it's so rewarding seeing the results. It was a little scary but we are really happy we went for it (and for photoshop mockups to determine the right color combo).
A couple people in our household aren't sure about us painting over our lime green frontdoor, but it was time for a change.🤷♀️

Nailing down the right fonts ➡️
Instagram's slow decline in the value of aesthetics is REAL.
I attribute this to a few things:
• A gazillion fonts out there for literally ANYONE to get their hands on and use
• Tons of "cookie-cutter" templates that are very beautiful but don't tell a single brand STORY
• Small Business owners who (RIGHTLY) don't want to hire a professional designer to create every social graphic for them, so they go the DIY route
how in the world do you choose. To strengthen your visual story stay consistent with the same set of fonts. If you haven't established your brand's fonts yet, I recommend using one or two fonts throughout all of your brand touchpoints.

With you in my rearview, I can see you were the biggest stretch my business has made this far. I booked out my project calendar in record-breaking ways, I was able to volunteer my time to a greater capacity, and I was able to take scheduled time off throughout the year, including a lighter summer schedule to spend time with my kiddos. Have you thought about the brands you encounter on any given day?
Let me set the scene for you...
→ You wake up to an alarm on your phone - you likely chose this particular phone's brand because you were drawn to it in some way. Whether it was the advertising, the design, functionality or the trend among friends...something influenced you to pick that brand.
→ You watch or read the news on a specific social media or news provider. What made you choose this platform?
→ You use all sorts of products to get yourself ready in the morning. How did you arrive at these certain products/brands? What made you choose these products over others? Did you buy this product because you liked the packaging? Did you read amazing reviews? Do they support a greater cause?
→ You wear clothing chosen to your taste. What made you choose that brand over others. Was it value? Status? Trendiness? Uniqueness? Convenience? Maybe it was the product description? Maybe a friend recommended it.
You get my point. That was just in the first 10 minutes of your day. 😆
We all process brand information without even realizing it. Whether you think so or not, you are a brand's target audience. Brands "know" you because they've thought through your routines...the things you like, the lifestyle you lead, the products you select, and more. It might sound a little creepy but in reality, these brands have done their homework to tug at your desires and heartstrings by building a brand that appeals to you. They believe in their product or service and know it will benefit you!
Next time you purchase from a brand, stop a moment to think about why you chose this product. Then look at their brand messaging and visuals. What story are they telling? Does it make sense that you converted from a looker into a customer? If these brands have done their homework, it should.

Does the perfectionist in you give yourself enough grace?
I'm going to tell you something embarrassing. #becauseimworkingonhumility I had an incident this week with a small business client (5 people) on a zoom call that made me want to crawl under the desk and never come out. I was having tech issues with the Zoom app. It wouldn't let me share my screen for some reason during my design reveal presentation so I had to leave my own meeting to resolve the issue and make them all stare at their computer screens until I was able to resolve things and get back on Zoom.
As a website designer, I'm supposed to be savvy at these things right? #facepalm #shottotheheart
It took me several hours before I was able to get this event that was stuck on replay out of my head. It was awful, embarrassing and I felt like it made me look SO unprofessional. I think the hardest part is I don't know what these clients really thought of my mishap even after I apologized profusely. Did they just lose all respect for me? Do they think I'm a flighty lunatic?
I had to stop my thought patterns. I heard that still small voice in my head say, "Mandy, it's OK. Give yourself grace."

The weekend flew by AGAIN. I'm back in the office today at my desk with my blankie, listening to a podcast while I get my long to-do list done before the kids come home from school. I intentionally don't schedule meetings on Mondays because Mondays are a big "hunker down for undivided project time" with my branding, website and retainer projects.
I find it easier to schedule/batch my time. It helps me feel less overwhelmed and it keeps me focused on the tasks for just one day.
Do you batch your time to help yourself stay motivated?

I confess there were times in my business when I wanted (and mostly worked with) EVERY SINGLE lead that came my way. I was so flattered and honored they found me and wanted to work with me. An accepted proposal meant a confidence boost. Who doesn't love that!?
But then, I actually had to do all that WORK! [Insert a picture of me trying to swim but never making it to the surface of the water for a breath. DROWNING in work] I was awake in the wee hours of the morning, dealing with unhealthy client boundaries, bad habits and a damaged emotional state.
The work I provided to my customers during those overworked, overwhelmed days was fine...but not to the caliber I knew I could produce.
Let's work toward allowing ourselves to run a business in a healthy way, shall we?

There's nothing worse than making a promise you can't keep. Evaluate your time in advance. Be honest if you can't start their project right away. In most cases, they want your quality work, over a rushed timeline. They'll respect you for informing them in advance.
〰Stop BITING OFF MORE than you can chew
Be a little pickier about the clients you work with. Not everyone is the best fit and that's OK. Setting boundaries on your time, and being realistic about how long things will take is a HUGE service to yourself. Also, there's absolutely no shame in hiring help or outsourcing if it's financially feasible!
〰Don't make PROMISES YOU CAN'T KEEP
Give yourself a buffer with the timeline. Isn't it so much nicer to over-deliver on a deadline than underdeliver? And you'll be surprised at how good it will feel to say something like "Guess what? Your project is ready early!" 🎉

Summer Photo Dump!
It was fun to look through my #summer2021 photos and reflect on the simple intentionality my family put into the summer. Because let's be honest, as a mom it never feels like I'm doing “enough.”
Looking back helps me realize how much I DO get to be in the “everyday”...and I love that. I will miss my kids when they go back to school. 💕 It's bittersweet.
Back to full-time work and lots of projects to finish up in 2021! I'm ready for that structure.

During our strategy sessions with Bock Real Estate Group, we discovered ways to differentiate the team by bringing SIMPLICITY in color, messaging, usability and visuals to an otherwise very busy and overwhelming industry (without sacrificing calls to action, or sales/lead generation). Also included in their website, was the development of a brand video and photoshoot with the help of the amazingly talented Austin Goode @austingoodefilm. Do you like talking on the phone?
My honest answer... I really don't like it. Even as a kid and all my friends sat for hours on the phone chatting, and I made up every excuse not to have to talk with them. I'm not really sure why other than that I feel like it interrupts in a different kind of way than any other form of communication.
My preferred forms of communication:
1. Scheduled Zoom: Oops, did I ruffle some feathers!? I know the pandemic made everyone hate video calling for a while, but something shifted and now I like it because it takes less of my day commuting AND I can still communicate with clients while my kids are in the other room.
2. In-Person Coffee: I love getting to know people, having someone directly in front of me with no other distractions. I feel it's easier to accomplish more on the to-do list when I sit in person with someone. Plus...COFFEE makes things lively and fun.
3. Asana or Slack: All of my projects are build on timelines and tasks. They are structured to help communicate in the easiest way possible. When you are able to communicate about a specific task when there are many of them, it makes communication so much easier.
4. Email: I respond to emails....but I'd much rather communicate about a project with ANY of the above ways before email. I have set times I check my email throughout the day which does help me stay on task though.
5. DM's or Text: OK, if you can talk to me in a few sentences for short things, I'm all about this. If it's a long text message I reply in my head and forget to actually type a response. Just ask my close friends. 🙈
6. Phone: DEAD LAST. 😂 If it's scheduled, I'll do it, but it still feels like more of an interruption to me than any other form of communication. And i really don't do well with that.

I LOVE the variety my job provides. I would be so bored doing the same color schemes, same general look and feels for every brand and website. Break your brand down into THREE categories:
⓵ Brand Heart - Dig deep into understanding
who you are. Discover or revisit your mission, vision, values, and purpose.
⓶ Brand Messaging - Learn ways of communicating to allow your audience to build equity and trust with you. What is your brand's personality, voice unique positioning and how can those things speak to your target client?
⓷ Brand Visuals - Tap into consistent design elements to create a crystal clear visual picture of your brand. A brand with recognizable elements on all touchpoints including your logo, color palette, typography, design elements will create sticky brand awareness.
After you've gone through this process, the flavor of your brand is none other than...your very own! This is why a customized brand strategy is a key component in converting lookers into customers.

Here are a few reasons you might be struggling...and a few quick fixes if you aren't able to invest in a pro right now.
OUTDATED
Times change and so does your brand. Outdated brands give your audience the message that the products/services you offer aren't innovative.
〰️ If your logo has outdated colors, try using the reversed out (1-color) version placed on a solid background for a more updated look.
〰️ Introduce one new color to freshen your existing brand palette.
Note: These suggestions should be done only ONE time and then repeatedly applied to your brand. If you keep changing things visually, your audience will be confused.
TOO MUCH DIY
Many entrepreneurs do a ton of "Do It Yourself" branding, purchasing a template here or there on the fly. Maybe you paid your niece who likes photoshop to create a brand piece for you 😁 and it's getting the job done but not really reflecting your true self.
〰️ Try sticking with just 1-2 simple visual elements that align with your personality to keep things looking more streamlined.
〰️ Keep it simple with plenty of white space and increase margins around your text and design elements, reduce your font size to make it look more professional.
LACK OF TIME
Sometimes you have to hit the ground running just to get something "out there." Entrepreneurs and small business owners are some of the busiest people. There are times you have to throw visual pieces together QUICK within a timeframe for your opening, launch, special event, social media campaign, email announcement, website, etc. You likely didn't have time to really nail your visual message so you put out something that was less than ideal. It's okay, we've all been there.
