6 Reasons I Decided NOT To Niche My Client Base
Color block of green and pink

As a business owner, it’s something you hear all the time…

“If you want to scale, you have to narrow down your niche.”

When I first heard that advice as a branding and website design service provider, I thought, “hmmmm, I’m not so sure that’s something I want to do.”

So I didn’t. This is a super unpopular choice and very rarely advised by brand experts, but after putting much thought into the idea  of niching down, I ultimately decided it’s not how I wanted to run my business.

I didn’t want to limit myself to a certain industry and there’s a few intentional reasons for this…

5 Reasons I Don't "Industry Niche" as a Branding Expert and Website Designer

1. I THRIVE ON VARIETY

I’ll admit that the thought of working with various industries might sound crazy to some people. I see so many people who have niched down absolutely killing it in their business and I love that for them!

But after working with several clients in various industries, I realized something about myself: I thrive on variety.

Over the course of my business, I’ve had the honor of working with people in healthcare, real estate, greenhouses (talk about niche!), home and lifestyle, restaurants and the travel industry.

Every single time I worked with these clients, the project was so incredibly unique and I was able to tap into my creativity and create something that was special to THEM.

I wasn’t clouded with what I had done for previous clients because they’re all different and that’s something that I love about the way I’ve designed my business.

2. I believe all Businesses deserve quality and strategic branding.

Oftentimes when people choose a niche, it’s typically a fun, trendy, exciting industry that a lotttt of people want to work with.

And I totally understand that - as a business owner, you of course want to work with fun and exciting brands and businesses.

But something I believe to my core is that EVERY business and brand deserves quality and strategic branding regardless of how glamorous their industry is.

For example, I’ve been able to work with people in industries such as underground utility, land acquisition specialists, bottle and can redemption and more.

Not exactly the most glamorous or “fun” businesses or brands that you typically think of, right?

Maybe not… but in my eyes they are still a business, they have a unique mission, they provide a service that people need and they are worthy of quality and strategic branding as much as my other clients.

What I love so much about working with less sought after industries is that the transformations that these businesses see after working with me are literally 0-100. Typically when I first start working with clients of this sort, they tend to have very basic, DIY'd websites and branding.

So when we work together and go through
my specific process, the transformation they see is HUGE and that is what’s so rewarding!

3. I LOVE A GOOD CHALLENGE

As a business owner, it’s really tempting to choose to do the “easy” thing that you’re highly skilled in. I think that’s often why people choose to work with certain industries because they typically understand the industry well and it’s easier to deliver your service.

While I do agree and totally understand why people do this, one thing about me is that I LOVE a good challenge.

When I choose to work with industries that I don’t have much experience with or that require more research on my end, I’m able to unlock parts of myself as a designer that I didn't even know existed.

As mentioned earlier, it allows me to tap into my creativity and come up with unique solutions that  I otherwise would’ve never thought of.

It’s sort of like when you’re a little kid and you start discovering a new sport you really love. You put so much effort into becoming skilled in that sport so you can eventually make the team. It’s a challenge that you have to put your mind to and it’s so rewarding every single time.

4. I’m a passionate supporter of ALL small businesses

As a small business owner myself, this is simply who I am. I know firsthand what it takes to start your small business.

It takes guts, courage, commitment and risks and no matter how it looks to the outside, it’s not easy.

There are so many challenges you have to face and so many new things you have to learn as a small business owner. And it can often be extremely lonely.

This is why I’m committed to being the ultimate cheerleader for ALL small businesses and I want everyone to know that they have a place in the market.

What you do is needed. YOU are valuable.

And if there’s ever a time that I can help you see how,
I’m right here for ya!

5. IT'S MORE ABOUT THE PERSON, NOT THE INDUSTRY

I believe that working with the right PERSON for you is more important than the industry specifically.

Sure, I could say that I *only* work with business owners in the travel industry, but who’s to say that my personality, communication style and way of working meshes well with every single person in the travel industry?

It’s just not possible!

Before I ever commit to working with a client, we have a call to make sure it’s a good fit - not just for me, but for them too.

If it is, great! But if not, that’s okay, too.

I’m not made for everyone – and everyone isn’t made for me. The same is true for you! When choosing which service provider to work with, I encourage you to focus more on WHO they are versus what industry they serve.

When you do this and choose the person that matches your style, THAT is when you’re able to win. 🏆

6. The services I offer niche for me

Even though I don’t industry niche on the client side of things, I DO have a very specific niche when it comes to the type of services I offer.

I serve small businesses in two ways:
brand design and website design.

THAT’S IT! If people don’t need either of those, then I’m clearly not the service provider they need.

This is truly the
only part of my business that is niched down!

With that said, if you’re in search of a branding expert or website designer to help YOU and your small business, I’d love to meet you!

A few DREAM business I’d love to work with next include:

  • Agriculture/Small Farm
  • Floral
  • Culinary
  • Fitness/Nutrition
  • Travel
  • Event Venue
  • Beauty

And if you aren’t one of those industries, I’d still love to hear from you!

There’s so much that could be said about each element of a brand design, but for this specifically, I want to hone in on color. Colors for your brand shouldn’t be chosen at random and it’s important to fully understand what each color means before you use it as a part of your brand. The best brand colors are chosen with a clear purpose in mind, so let’s dive into the color psychology of some of the most popular colors you’re probably used to seeing. If you’re unfamiliar, color psychology suggests that different colors can evoke specific emotions, moods, and associations. While it’s true that individual perceptions may vary, there is a general rule of thumb associated with every color on the color wheel.
